Obama, during a golf outing Sunday afternoon in San Diego, accidentally crashed a wedding at the country club where he was playing.
Stephanie and Brian Tobe had been scheduled to wed at the Torrey Pines Golf Course and had been aware that the President would be finishing up his day on the green right before their big event was slated to begin.
But as the couple was getting ready for the ceremony to start, they were told that Obama was still on the last hole — “which happens to fall right in front of the ceremony site — as in, right behind the altar,” Jeff and Erin Youngren, who photographed the wedding.
“Jeff was with Brian and Stephanie, who were tucked away in their suite in the hotel with their families in preparation for the ceremony. They couldn’t go out on their balcony, so they pressed against the window, watching everything unfold below,” the photographers said.
“Then he finishes his game and goes down to the lawn area, which is where our ceremony was,” Stephanie Tobe, the bride, told ABC News.
Obama, who had been in California for a series of fund-raisers, stuck around to shake the hands of all 60 guests who had begun being seated.
But Stephanie, who was waiting in a private suite and was already dolled up in her dress and makeup, didn’t want to miss out on what she thought could be the wedding photo of a lifetime.
“Once I heard that there might be an opportunity to even just say hi, shake his hand or even try to take a picture, we darted,” Tobe told ABC. “We ran to the closest elevator, got downstairs and I picked up my huge dress and I just started running across the lawn to get over to the President.”
The lucky couple ended up hugging and talking with Obama — and the whole experience was captured on film.
They even got a little presidential advice.
“Right when we saw him, Stephanie got to him first. And he said congrats to Stephanie right away. And at that moment he pointed out that my foot was actually on the train or the trail of her wedding dress on the ground and he said, I don’t remember his exact words, but he’s so relaxed, and he says nope, nope you know … you can’t step on the wedding dress,” Brian Tobe told ABC.
“I think it was our first marriage advice,” he added.
